I have seen it happen again and again. When kids still have that end-of-summer freedom in them, when they are not yet back in the structured rhythm of school days, they are more themselves. To get there, I have had to let go of the idea that a session needs to be tightly controlled to be successful. Play can make for genuinely beautiful family portraits. I still make a plan; I always do, but I hold that plan loosely and let things unfold naturally. When a family is having fun together, the camera catches something real.

The hesitation I hear most often goes something like this: "I just want it to look nice and put-together." And I completely understand that. You are investing in these photos, and you want them to feel worthy of your wall.

Structured does not mean stiff

Yes, I come prepared. I know how to move through a session, how to guide everyone so we get a variety of images, and how to keep things feeling comfortable. But some of the most beautiful portraits I have taken happened when a kid decided to explore something on the ground, or when a dad scooped up his child mid-laugh, or when everyone just... forgot the camera was there for a second.

You do not have to perform for me. That is not what we are here to do.

Play is part of the process

When children feel free to move, interact, and enjoy themselves, the images that come from that are full of life. And that is what you will love looking at ten years from now.
