There are so many reasons why I believe photos are important. Of course, you have life celebrations such as birth, graduation, and marriage but those aren't the only important times. I will list a few reasons why having portraits is important.

Depending on your profession, you may need to have images of yourself to showcase your professionalism and your personality. You need to have professional images for business cards, websites, and social media. Every business benefits from great images that can be used for presenting who you are to your clients.

When you have a portrait taken of yourself by a professional, something special happens. You get to see the beauty that is always you! The beauty that your loved ones, like your children and spouse, see when they look at you.
It also is a confidence booster for you and a special time to love who you are, because there is only one of you and you mean a lot to those around you.
Legacy
As a kid, I loved looking through photo albums and portraits of my family. I could see family members when they were younger and the types of people they were at that time in their lives. It was also a great way to learn about them and their stories. Listening to their stories would reveal attributes I had in myself and that I was part of my family in ways I hadn't noticed before. When I see their photos, it reminds me of where I come from. Portraits are a great way to give that legacy to you and your family.
